This project is providing a new high efficiency, building-level heating system in place of the existing central steam system. This upgrade converts all the existing facilities at NSGL from a central steam heat source to a building-level heat source and demolishes the existing steam generation and associated distribution systems. The length of the above ground steam piping demolition is approximately 19,746 LF and sizes range from 8”-20” in diameter. Length of above ground condensate piping is approximately 19,487 LF (and size range from 6”-8” diameter). Approximately 39 pits will require asbestos abatement.
Demolition includes:
- Phased decommissioning and demolition of the existing steam system
- Demolition of various out-of-use buildings (11, 3000, 811, 909, 1709
- Demolition of system components, such as above ground steam and condensate piping, above ground piping supports, steam pits, piping located in tunnels, chases, and direct-buried pipes.
- Demolition of 225 steam pits (out of 264 existing)
